Upper
The upper is a masterclass in detail, featuring a circular knit and engineered mesh that is incredibly breathable. It features 360-degree reflectivity, making it one of the safest shoes for night running. However, be warned: the fit is classic Nike, very narrow through the midfoot and toebox.
Midsole
This is where the magic happens. Nike has sandwiched a full-length sculpted Air Zoom unit between a top layer of ZoomX and a bottom layer of ReactX. Unlike the Nike Vaporfly 4, which pioneered the carbon plate era, the Pegasus Premium uses this air unit to provide a “trampoline-like” bounce. It’s stiff, but the energy return is undeniable.
Outsole
The traditional waffle outsole provides excellent traction, though there is exposed foam in the midfoot to save weight. I’m only concerned with the exposed Air unit could be prone to punctures from sharp road debris.
Who is this shoe for?
The Nike Pegasus Premium is for the runner who wants a “fun” experience above all else. If you are a fan of the bouncy sensation found in the Alphafly but want it for your daily recovery runs, this is it. It’s also an excellent lifestyle cross-over for those who want a futuristic look with all-day walking comfort.
If you’re looking for something lighter and more agile for tempo efforts, you might prefer the Nike Zoomfly 6 instead.
Verdict
The Nike Pegasus Premium is a bold, polarizing statement. It isn’t a “do-it-all” workhorse like the Pegasus 41, nor is it a speed specialist. It is a niche, luxury trainer designed for those who value technology and a springy ride over weight and agility. While it may be too heavy for some, for the Nike “Fanboy” or the runner looking for a fun new sensation, it offers a ride that no other shoe on the market can currently replicate.
