Kenyan runner wins marathon in carbon plated sandals

Barnabas Kiplimo Wins Khon Kaen Marathon in Carbon Plated Sandals

In an extraordinary display of innovation and endurance, Kenyan marathoner Barnabas Kiplimo etched his name in the history books by winning the 20th edition of the Khon Kaen Marathon in Thailand on Sunday, January 19th. The 28-year-old stunned the running world by crossing the finish line first in 2:18:55—wearing VING carbon plated sandals.

But these weren’t ordinary sandals. Kiplimo raced in the Nirun, the world’s first carbon-plated running sandal, designed by Thai brand VING. Dubbed the “world’s first super sandal,” the Nirun combines cutting-edge technology with a traditional thong-style flip-flop design. Its proprietary foam upper and midsole house a full-length carbon plate, delivering exceptional responsiveness and enhancing cadence, while a foam heel strap ensures added security during high-speed runs.

VING Carbon Plate Sandals

VING Carbon Plated Sandals: A New Era of Running Footwear

Unlike conventional carbon-plated racing shoes that rely on lightweight fabrics for uppers, the Nirun redefines performance gear with its minimalistic yet innovative approach. VING has been rigorously testing the super sandal at their product camp in Iten, Kenya—a renowned training hub for elite long-distance runners. The testing aims to assess the sandal’s durability, performance, and speed under warm conditions.

Although still in its prototype phase, VING plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign in February to fund the next iteration of the sandals. The brand also intends to showcase the Nirun at the 2025 L.A. Marathon, signaling its ambition to revolutionize the running world.

Kiplimo’s Remarkable Victory

Kiplimo’s win at the Khon Kaen Marathon wasn’t just a victory; it was a statement. Having placed 43rd in the 2023 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, the Kenyan made a staggering improvement, shaving eight minutes off his personal best. His dominance in the second half of the race left Ethiopia’s Ebisa Kure Takele trailing by nearly three minutes, with Takele finishing second in 2:21:43. Fellow Ethiopian Tsega Desta Mehari claimed third in 2:52:11.

While the race’s course record of 2:16:44, set by Kenyan Kennedy Kiptoo Lilan 14 years ago, remains intact, Kiplimo’s performance drew global attention for its groundbreaking footwear choice.

Nirun, designed by Thai running brand VING

The Future of Running with VING Carbon Plated Sandals

For his win, Kiplimo earned $1,467 (Ksh 189,792) in prize money, but his achievement goes beyond financial rewards. It showcases the potential of unconventional gear in competitive running and underscores the importance of innovation in breaking barriers.

The Nirun’s debut at Khon Kaen hints at a future where performance meets simplicity, proving that even the most traditional designs can adapt to modern technology. With VING’s upcoming Kickstarter and further development, these sandals may soon become a staple in the running community.

Barnabas Kiplimo’s historic triumph not only cemented his place in marathon lore but also sparked a conversation about what’s possible when innovation meets grit. As he crossed the finish line wearing the world’s first super sandal, he reminded us that sometimes, all it takes to make history is the courage to try something new.

Mizuno Neo Zen Review: A Versatile Daily Trainer Redefined

Mizuno has been making impressive strides in the running shoe market with bold innovations and standout designs. In 2023, they shook things up with the Wave Rebellion Pro, a race-day shoe featuring a heavily rockered design and an unorthodox 50mm+ midsole in sections not measured by World Athletics. This shoe was aggressive, fun, and a break from the norm. Then came the Neo Vista, a super trainer with a snug knit bootie upper, Enerzy NXT foam, and a Wave Plate for added propulsion. It was soft, comfortable, and capable of handling long distances.

Now in 2024, Mizuno has unveiled the Neo Zen, an all-new daily trainer that builds upon the Neo Vista’s legacy while carving out its unique identity. This shoe was among the exciting announcements made at The Running Event 2024, where Mizuno also teased four mystery shoes that left the running world buzzing.

Key specifications:

Brand: Mizuno
Model: Neo Zen
Weight: 9 oz. (255 g) for US 9 model
Heel: 40 mm
Toe: 34 mm
Heel drop: 6 mm
Carbon plate: No plate

mizuno neo zen

Price of Mizuno Neo Zen

Price: $150 USD
Release date: December 13, 2024

Upper

Mizuno neo zen upper

The Mizuno Neo Zen borrows heavily from the Neo Vista’s design, starting with the same premium knit upper. It’s breathable, stretchy, and soft but manages to feel structured and supportive where needed. The seamless integrated tongue is padded just enough to let you cinch the laces securely without causing irritation on the top of your foot. This upper ensures a comfortable, locked-in fit that accommodates various foot shapes.

Midsole

mizuno neo zen

At the core of the Neo Zen’s performance lies its Enerzy NXT midsole foam, a nitrogen-infused TPU material that delivers a springy, responsive ride. Unlike the Neo Vista, which included a Wave Plate for added propulsion, the Neo Zen opts for a midsole-only design, making it more flexible and versatile.
The shoe’s stack height—40mm in the heel and 34mm in the forefoot—is slightly lower than the Neo Vista’s towering 44.5mm stack. This difference not only reduces weight (the Neo Zen is just 9 ounces for a US M9, a half-ounce lighter than the Neo Vista) but also provides a smoother, more natural ride.

Outsole

mizuno neo zen

The Neo Zen features an almost full-coverage X10 rubber outsole, offering exceptional traction and stability. This outsole design helps maintain the foam’s structure and ensures reliable grip, even on varied surfaces. The wide base and midfoot channel further enhance stability, making the Neo Zen a trustworthy choice for runners tackling uneven terrain.

Who Should Consider the Mizuno Neo Zen?

The Neo Zen is perfect for runners seeking a versatile daily trainer that balances cushioning, responsiveness, and stability. Its lightweight design, flexible midsole, and breathable upper make it an excellent choice for a variety of runs—from easy miles to mid-distance efforts. Whether you’re a neutral runner looking for a reliable workhorse or someone who enjoys a smooth, natural ride, the Neo Zen fits the bill.

Pros

✅ Responsive Cushioning
✅ Lightweight
✅ Enhanced stability on various terrains

Cons

❌ Excessive forefoot volume
❌ Those seeking extra propulsion may miss the plate

Verdict

The Mizuno Neo Zen is a standout daily trainer that combines comfort, responsiveness, and value in a lightweight package. By refining elements from the Neo Vista and introducing new features, Mizuno has created a shoe that shines in performance and versatility. At $150, it’s hard to find a better shoe for the money. Whether you’re logging everyday miles or mixing in some speed work, the Neo Zen delivers a smooth, enjoyable ride that can handle it all.

Understanding Plantar Fasciitis

Best Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis involves the degeneration of collagen fibers in the plantar fascia at its origin, leading to heel pain. This condition is often caused by repetitive overstretching and micro-tears of the plantar fascia, commonly resulting from activities that place excessive stress on the heel, such as running.

Signs of Plantar Fasciitis

Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp pain in the heel, especially during the first steps after waking up.
  • Increased pain after prolonged periods of standing or after exercise.
  • Stiffness and discomfort in the heel and along the arch of the foot.

How to Find the Best Running Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

When selecting running shoes, consider the following:

  • Arch Support: Choose shoes that match your arch type (low, medium, or high) to provide adequate support.
  • Cushioning: Opt for shoes with moderate cushioning to absorb impact without compromising stability.
  • Heel Support: A deep heel cup can help stabilize the heel and reduce strain on the plantar fascia.
  • Midsole Rigidity: Shoes with a stiff midsole can decrease stress on the plantar fascia during running.

How to Find the Best Running Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis

Proper Fit: Ensure there’s adequate room in the toe box without being too loose.

Breathability: Materials that allow airflow can keep feet cool and dry.

Durability: High-quality materials that withstand regular use without losing support.

What to Avoid if You Have Plantar Fasciitis

High Heels: They can increase pressure on the forefoot and exacerbate symptoms.

Flat Shoes: Lack of arch support can strain the plantar fascia.

Worn-Out Footwear: Shoes that have lost their cushioning and support can worsen the condition.

Additional Tips for Living with Plantar Fasciitis

Stretching Exercises: Regularly stretch the calf muscles and plantar fascia to alleviate tension. Orthotic Inserts: Custom or over-the-counter insoles can provide additional support. Rest and Ice: Resting the foot and applying ice can reduce inflammation and pain. Consult a Professional: Seek advice from a podiatrist or physical therapist for personalized treatment options.

Selecting the right running shoes, combined with proper foot care and lifestyle adjustments, can significantly alleviate the discomfort associated with plantar fasciitis and enhance your running experience.

Anta C202 5 GT Review

Anta C202 5 GT Review: Is It Really This Good?

Anta Sports, a name synonymous with rapid growth and innovation, has made significant strides in the athletic footwear industry. Established in 1991 in China, Anta initially gained recognition for its basketball shoes, sponsoring NBA players like Klay Thompson and Gordon Hayward. However, the brand’s ambitions have expanded beyond the court. After the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Anta surged in popularity, solidifying itself as a global powerhouse in sportswear. Recently, it ventured into running, marking its entry with an impactful sponsorship of Kenenisa Bekele, one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

The Anta C202 5 GT, the brand’s flagship racing shoe, reflects Anta’s commitment to innovation. Its name, “C202,” carries symbolic significance. The shoe was conceived when the marathon world record stood at 2:02:57, and it aims to inspire runners to break boundaries. The “GT” signifies “Gran Turismo,” a nod to high-performance vehicles, suggesting speed, efficiency, and a cutting-edge design ethos. This combination of thoughtful nomenclature and engineering positions the C202 5 GT as a serious contender in the carbon-plated racing shoe market.

Let’s dive into the review of this meticulously crafted super shoe, exploring how it stands out as a versatile, budget-friendly option for races.

Key specifications:

  • Weight: 204g (7.2 oz) for US 9 men’s model
  • Stack Height: 33mm (heel), 25mm (forefoot)
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm
  • Best For: Race day
  • Price: $180

Upper: Snug Fit, Secure Feel

Anta C202 5 GT review

The Anta C202 5 GT features a thin, synthetic, translucent mesh upper that fits snugly throughout. However, it may feel slightly short for some runners. The toe box tapers quickly, which could feel restrictive, especially for those with wider feet. Adjusting the laces can improve comfort, but the fit remains tight.
Anta claims the upper offers 14% more breathability than standard running shoes, which adds to its appeal for warmer races. However, the scratchy texture of the material means socks are essential. The heel has ample padding for comfort, unusual for a racing shoe, though it might add unnecessary weight.

Notably, the shoe includes two lace options to suit personal preferences. Despite the snug fit, the lightweight tongue minimizes lace pressure, ensuring a secure lockdown.

Highlights of the Upper:

  • Thin engineered mesh for breathability
  • Lightweight yet secure lockdown
  • Non-removable insole may limit customization options

Midsole: Responsive and Firm

Anta C202 5 GT review

The midsole of the Anta C202 5 GT combines a nitrogen-infused PEBA foam with a rolling carbon plate. The result is a firmer ride compared to many competitors, yet it feels resilient and responsive, especially at faster paces. The shoe performs best during tempo runs, intervals, or race-day efforts. The early forefoot rocker and firm bounce provide a propulsive ride, ideal for maintaining speed over long distances. However, this firmness might feel less forgiving for slower recovery runs.

Midsole Features:

  • Nitrogen-infused foam for 84% energy return
  • Carbon plate for speed and momentum
  • Best suited for runners seeking a firmer bounce

Outsole: Durable and Grippy

Anta C202 5 GT review

The outsole features Liquid Anti-Slip Rubber that offers reliable traction across various surfaces. This material covers the forefoot and midfoot, with exposed sections revealing the carbon plate for added flair. After logging 25 miles, the outsole shows minimal wear, proving its durability. The grip enhances stability, making it suitable for different race conditions.

Outsole Advantages:

  • Excellent traction for road running
  • Durable rubber with minimal wear

Who Should Consider the Anta C202 5 GT?

The Anta C202 5 GT is ideal for runners looking for a budget-friendly super shoe with a snug fit and a firmer ride. It excels in shorter distances like 5K or 10K but remains versatile enough for half and full marathons.

Runners new to carbon-plated shoes or those seeking a responsive ride without spending over $200 will find this shoe appealing. However, those with wider feet or a preference for softer midsoles might want to explore other options.

Verdict

At $180, the Anta C202 5 GT delivers solid performance in the crowded super shoe market. Its responsive midsole, reliable traction, and budget-friendly price make it a strong contender for race day. While the snug fit and firm ride may not suit everyone, these trade-offs are minimal given its value. If you’re searching for a reliable, affordable carbon-plated racing shoe for your next PR attempt, the Anta C202 5 GT is worth considering.

Diadora Frequenza Review: A Lightweight Shoe Built for Speed

Diadora continues to expand its running shoe lineup with the Diadora Frequenza, an Italian-made shoe crafted for runners who demand performance and style. Positioned between the Gara Carbon, built for speed, and the Cellula, designed for recovery runs, the Frequenza offers a blend of responsiveness, comfort, and versatility.

I took the Frequenza on several test runs, including 20 km long runs, easy-paced efforts, and fartlek sessions. This Diadora Frequenza review dives into its features, strengths, and areas where it might fall short.

Key specifications:

  • Weight: 8.1 oz (229 g) for US M9
  • Stack Height: 35mm (heel), 27mm (forefoot)
  • Heel-to-Toe Drop: 8mm
  • Best For: Tempo runs, daily training, and light races
  • Price: $180

Upper: Breathable and Comfortable

diadora frequenza review

The Frequenza’s upper features Nylon Air Mesh with a unique diamond pattern. This design keeps the shoe breathable, while the microfiber enhances durability. The thin, non-gusseted tongue stays secure thanks to a suede-like material, adding to the snug fit. Inside, the anatomical insole made of printed EVA offers additional comfort and support. Combined with the sleek Italian design, the Frequenza stands out visually while delivering functionality.

Midsole: Soft and Responsive

diadora frequenza review

Diadora uses its Anima N2 EVA foam for the midsole, delivering a soft and bouncy ride. This super-critical EVA provides a responsive feel that’s not overly firm or squishy, making it versatile for various training paces. However, the soft cushioning might not suit heavier runners who need more support or stability. The flexibility of the midsole could also be a drawback for those who prefer a firmer platform.

Outsole: Durable and Reliable

diadora frequenza review

The Duratech 5000 outsole combines anti-wear rubber with exposed midsole cutouts to reduce weight. It performs well on multiple surfaces, including gravel and light trails, without significant wear after testing. The rubber coverage ensures durability, while the cutouts add flexibility and reduce bulk.

Who Should Buy the Diadora Frequenza?

The Frequenza is ideal for experienced runners who prefer lightweight shoes for faster-paced runs or daily training. It suits light-to-medium weight runners (up to 85 kg) with a neutral stride and a fondness for an 8mm drop. If you value Italian craftsmanship and a shoe that transitions effortlessly between training speeds, this is worth considering.

Comparable shoes

The Diadora Frequenza shares similarities with other popular models, including:

  • ASICS Novablast 4: Both offer a lightweight, bouncy ride, though the Novablast has a slightly firmer feel.
  • New Balance Rebel v4: The Rebel feels lighter and softer but lacks some of the Frequenza’s versatility.
  • Nike Invincible Run: This model offers more cushioning but feels bulkier in comparison.
  • hylo Impact: Both have flexible midsoles, but the Frequenza feels more stable.

Verdict

The Diadora Frequenza is a well-rounded shoe that caters to runners seeking a lightweight and responsive trainer. While its $180 price tag is higher than some competitors, its Italian craftsmanship and versatile performance justify the cost for many. It excels as a daily trainer capable of handling faster paces, making it a great addition to a shoe rotation. Though marketed for tempo runs and speed workouts, it works equally well for long runs or casual miles.

With the Frequenza, Diadora reinforces its commitment to performance and innovation, proving they’re serious about competing in the running shoe market. Stick to your usual size and enjoy smooth, enjoyable miles with this impressive shoe.

Interview with Yeti Zhang at Mount To Coast

Built for the Ultra: How Mount to Coast Is Making Big Strides in a Short Time

The running shoe industry is undoubtedly one of the most competitive, with rapidly evolving technologies pushing brands to innovate continually. Amid this fast-paced landscape emerges a new contender: Mount to Coast. Unlike many, Mount to Coast isn’t just entering to compete—it’s here to fill a gap in the ultrarunning world with a focus on the unique needs of endurance athletes. We had the privilege of speaking with Yeti Zhang, Head of Product at Mount to Coast, who shared insights into the inspiration behind the brand, their unique approach to design, and the values that set them apart. Dive in as Yeti unveils what makes Mount to Coast stand out in this challenging industry, and how they’re transforming the way ultrarunners experience every mile.

Athletico: What was the inspiration behind starting Mount to Coast? Was there a specific moment or experience that made you realize there was a need for a new running shoe brand?

Yeti Zhang: Ultrarunners are known for their passion for running. For many, it’s not about being the fastest but about fulfilling a desire to push further, savoring the introspective journey that comes with each mile. We see ultrarunners as the purest form of athletes. However, because this community is niche and ultrarunning isn’t an Olympic sport,
the commercial appeal has been limited, and their specific needs have been overlooked by mainstream shoe brands. This is what drives us to found Mount to Coast. We aim to create shoes that cater to those who truly love running, helping them go the distance and beyond.

Athletico: Mount to Coast emphasizes ultra-distance running. How does that focus influence your shoe design compared to brands targeting more general audiences?
What specific features make your shoes stand out for endurance runners?

Yeti Zhang: A few years ago, we had the privilege of meeting Lucong Geng, a legendary ultrarunner who set the record for the 1,000-mile ultramarathon of 2022 (here’s an interview with him for context). Through our in-depth conversations, we gained insight into the unique challenges he faces—challenges that current products on the
market fail to address.

Firstly, the midsole’s durability performance. Most running shoes in current market don’t provide consistent cushion and response for ultra distance running, and runners often experience midsole breakdown and they need multiple shoe replacements for big endurance races.

Secondly, the dynamic fit of the shoe upper. We found that runners’ feet swell significantly in multi-day running and they need to cut the upper for a bigger room, or they need to choose a few sizes up shoes at the expense of protection and risking injury.

As a footwear veteran, our chief product designer firmly believes we need to stand up and do something for them. Thus, our R1 addresses these concerns head-on. For the midsole, we teamed up with BASF to develop ZeroSag, an innovative shock-absorbing material originally used in racing car suspensions. ZeroSag boasts up to 10 times the durability of traditional EVA midsoles. For the upper, the R1 features a roomy forefoot area and a dual lacing system, enabling runners to adjust the fit around both the forefoot and rearfoot independently.

Before launching, we conducted extensive testing within the ultramarathon community. The ultimate test came during the MTC JOGLE 2024, a grueling 17-day ultramarathon across Great Britain, where Justin Montague shattered all records, completing the entire 854 miles in a single pair of Mount to Coast R1. This success confirmed our shoes’ problem-solving capabilities, prompting our market launch.

R1 TWILIGHT - Mount to Coast
Athletico: What role does sustainability play in your shoe development process?
Are there any eco-friendly materials or methods you’re proud of incorporating into your products?

Yeti Zhang: All of our models feature the LightCELL technology, utilizing a supercritical physical foaming process with injected nitrogen instead of chemical agents. This method, currently the most eco-friendly midsole foaming process available, results in midsoles that are 50% lighter and provide 45% more energy return than traditional
EVA midsoles. Despite its higher cost, we are committed to using this process for all future models until an even more eco-friendly method becomes available.
Our factory sources nitrogen from the atmosphere, converts it into liquid form for the foaming process, and releases it back into the atmosphere. This helps to maintain an ecological balance. The factory earned LEED Gold Certification for green buildings in April 2023, and 15% of its electricity is powered by solar energy.

Moreover, the R1’s upper is made of 40% recycled polyester, while the S1’s upper uses 100% recycled yarn. These efforts also reflect our commitment to eco-friendly practices.
At Mount to Coast, functionality is our top priority, with sustainability as a plus. The most unsustainable practice is producing inadequate shoes. If a shoe is purchased but fails to meet the user’s needs and goes unused, it causes the greatest environmental harm, regardless of how “eco-friendly” it claims to be.

Athletico:How do you ensure your shoes provide the right balance between comfort and performance?
What types of testing or feedback loops are used to refine your models?

Yeti Zhang: Over the past 20 months before launching our brand, we kept enlisting over 300 dedicated runners to traverse a total of more than 90,000 miles (140,000 km) for rigorous testing. It culminated in the refinement and evolution of our product, shaping it into the R1 and S1 models that stand before us today.

ISPO AWARD 2023 Mount to coast
Athletico: Mount to Coast emphasizes comfort as key to building confidence in runners. How do you translate this philosophy into your shoe design?

Yeti Zhang: We use our proprietary technologies to prioritize comfort in our products. For example, our LightCELL midsole base material features an impressive light weight with an excellent energy return while the ZeroSag midsole inserts guarantees extraordinary cushioning on the longest runs. We also use premium materials on the upper to ensure breathability and durability for runners to log hundreds of miles.

Athletico: What challenges did you face while bringing the R1, S1, and P1 models to market? How do you differentiate these models, and what kind of runners would benefit from each?

Yeti Zhang: The R1 is our race model for ultra races while the S1 is the daily trainer for everyday training sessions and the P1 is our first stability shoe best for runners with overpronation. The main challenge when bringing them to the market was balancing durability and cushioning while maintaining a sleek, minimalist look.

Source: Mount to Coast
Athletico: What is the design process like at Mount to Coast? Can you walk us through how a new concept evolves into a final product?

Yeti Zhang: Our design process is a journey of combining innovative functionality, environmental sustainability, and the distinct needs of ultrarunners. Here’s a brief introduction at how our new concept evolves into a final product:

1. Concept Ideation: Our team draws inspiration from real-world feedback, ultrarunning insights, and cutting-edge research in biomechanics and materials. We’re constantly collaborating with ultrarunners to understand the evolving demands they face on diverse terrains.

2. Research and Development: Every shoe concept is rigorously researched, starting with the essentials like optimal cushioning, grip, and stability. This stage includes testing potential materials, including those with eco-friendly properties, that align with our commitment to sustainability without sacrificing durability.

3. Prototyping and Testing: Once a design blueprint is in place, we create initial prototypes. These prototypes are tested by athletes under real-world conditions, covering everything from ultramarathons to daily trails. Feedback on aspects like performance, comfort, and wear is essential to refine the design.

4. Iteration and Refinement: Based on the test results, our designers make adjustments, often iterating multiple prototypes to achieve the perfect blend of performance, comfort, and resilience. This stage can involve tweaks in cushioning, traction, or the shoe’s structure to ensure it withstands the demands of intense ultrarunning.

5. Finalization and Quality Assurance: After extensive testing and modifications, the final design is confirmed. We conduct a thorough quality check, ensuring that each pair aligns with our high standards for durability and eco-friendliness. The finished product is a fusion of athlete insight, sustainable design, and unmatched performance, ready to take on any challenge.

6. Launch and Feedback Loop: We launch the new product with detailed insights and encourage feedback, ensuring that each release contributes to the continuous improvement of our designs. This collaborative, iterative process makes every Mount to Coast shoe a reliable partner for runners across the world.

Athletico: Your shoes feature the quote 'When I run, I am just running.' Can you tell us about the significance of this statement?
How does this reflect the brand’s overall philosophy?

Yeti Zhang: This statement is inspired by Zen philosophy. We hope it encourages runners to enjoy the process of running rather than focusing on the results, such as running faster, getting healthier, or winning medals—though all of these are great, we believe that the most important thing is to enjoy running itself. In fact, we use this mindset to
motivate ourselves as we launch a new brand in the fierce competition of the running shoe market. As Homer said, “The journey is its own reward,” we often remind ourselves not to focus on whether we succeed or fail, but to stay engaged in the process and do our best in the moment.

Athletico: As a newer brand in a competitive space, how do you view the current state of the running shoe market?
What trends do you see shaping the future of running footwear?

Yeti Zhang: In today’s market, where running shoes are highly homogeneous (with features like carbon plates and thick soles), we believe people inherently crave diverse expressions, which is possibly a reason why emerging running brands are so welcomed.

As the sport becomes more diverse across many different categories, new brands not only bring fresh products, but also different understandings and even philosophical perspectives on running that resonate with broader audiences and/or demographics. Compared to larger, long-established brands, new companies like ours are more agile and more focused. At Mount to Coast, our team members and partnered athletes can contribute suggestions and once accepted, these changes can be quickly implemented. This level of responsiveness, especially in the product development process, is unimaginable in large corporations.

We are always tinkering with new designs and innovating for the ultrarunning community, including prototyping what a carbon plated shoe would look like for ultrarunners trying to go both farther and faster. In the meantime, we will continue to serve the endurance running community with shoe options that support every step of their training on trail or road including race day, training, and recovery runs.

mount to coast line up
Source: Mount to Coast
Athletico: What is something unique about Mount to Coast that sets it apart from other running shoe brands, and where do you see the brand in the next 5 years?

Yeti Zhang: Mount to Coast is the first performance footwear brand in the world to specialize in ultrarunning. Whereas major brands have not found the value or excitement in the sport, we have prioritized ultrarunning above all else. We want to be the go-to brand for ultrarunners, providing innovative solutions for their performance needs and elevating the unique culture of long-distance running.

As we wrap up, it’s clear that Mount to Coast is not just another player in the running shoe market—it’s a brand with a mission to elevate ultrarunning and the people who make it a way of life. Yeti Zhang’s insights reveal a brand deeply committed to addressing the unique needs of endurance athletes while embracing innovation and sustainability. With bold plans for the future and a focus on empowering runners at every step of their journey, Mount to Coast is poised to leave an indelible mark in the world of ultrarunning. Thank you to Yeti for sharing this inspiring vision, and we look forward to seeing what Mount to Coast accomplishes in the years to come.

Suunto Wing Review: Best Open-Ear Bone Conduction Headphone?

In the world of outdoor audio gear, Suunto has made an interesting move with the Suunto Wing, a Bluetooth bone-conduction headset. By delivering sound through bone conduction, the Wing allows users to stay aware of their surroundings, making it ideal for runners, hikers, and cyclists who want to listen to audio while maintaining full awareness. This Suunto Wing review dives into its features, performance, and who might benefit most from this innovative headset.

      What's in the box?

What's included in Suunto Wing headphones
    1. Suunto Wing headphones
    2. Headphone charging cable
    3. Powerbank
    4. Suunto storage bag
    5. Earplugs
    6. Printed user quick guide
    7. International warranty leaflet
    8. Safety leaflet
    9. Design and Build Quality

      Suunto Wing review build quality

The Suunto Wing immediately stands out with its rugged, premium design. Crafted from silicone and titanium, the Wing is built to last, and the materials keep it light and comfortable at just 33 grams. The IP67 water-resistance rating is a plus, allowing the Wing to withstand rain, sweat, and dust, though it won’t conduct sound underwater. This makes it a practical choice for all-weather conditions, ensuring durability on rough trails or rainy days.

The headset fits comfortably around the back of the head and over the ears. While the design is stable for running or biking, it may need minor adjustments if worn with a bike helmet, depending on the helmet’s fit.

Key Features of the Suunto Wing

      • Bone Conduction Technology: Enables safe audio listening while keeping ears open to ambient sounds, increasing safety for outdoor activities.

      • Weight: Light at 33 grams, providing comfort during prolonged wear.
      • Battery Life: Up to 10 hours of playtime, with an additional 20 hours from the portable charging dock.

      • Dual Microphone with Noise Cancellation: Offers clear voice capture during calls.

      • Smart Head Gesture Control: Simple nodding and shaking gestures for call handling and music control.

      • IP67 Rating: Resistant to water and dust, making it suitable for various weather conditions.

      • Temperature Range: Operates effectively from -20°C to 60°C, handling diverse climates with ease.

      Sound Quality

For those primarily listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or calls, the Suunto Wing delivers clear sound. However, if you’re an audiophile expecting deep bass and high fidelity, these may not satisfy. Bone-conduction technology is generally better for mid-range audio, and the Wing reflects this. The open-ear design prioritizes safety and situational awareness over immersive sound, making it perfect for outdoor use but less ideal in noisy environments. In loud settings, such as busy streets or airports, volume might struggle to compete with ambient noise. Suunto includes foam earplugs, which can help in certain situations, though these aren’t recommended when situational awareness is essential.

      Battery Life and Charging

Suunto Wing review charging and battery life

Battery life is a strong suit for the Suunto Wing. The headset itself provides up to 10 hours of playback on a single charge. Additionally, the portable charging dock offers an extra 20 hours, making it ideal for extended trips or long-distance outings. A quick 10-minute charge delivers up to 3 hours of playback, and a full charge takes only an hour. The charging dock connects via USB-C, but it’s worth noting that the USB-C cable isn’t included. However, the magnetic cable for charging the headset directly is included, which is a convenient touch.

      Controls and Functionality

      Suunto Wing review controls

Suunto has kept controls simple and intuitive. The buttons are easy to locate and use, even while moving:

      • Right Side Buttons: Control volume and power. A long press on the front button powers the headset on and off, while a quick tap changes the volume.

      • Left Side Button: Controls play/pause and track changes. A single tap pauses, a double tap skips tracks, and a long press activates voice commands like Siri.

      • Gesture Controls: Nod to answer calls, shake to skip songs. This feature is convenient, though users may find gesture controls limited to basic functions.
Pairing with devices is straightforward, and once the initial setup is complete, operation feels seamless.

      Ideal Scenarios for Suunto Wing

      Great for:

      • Outdoor Runners and Cyclists: The open-ear design keeps users aware of their surroundings, enhancing safety.

      • Long-Distance Users: The charging dock with 20 additional hours of battery life is ideal for extended adventures.

      • Audio Casuals: Perfect for those who prefer podcasts, audiobooks, or background music during outdoor activities.

      Not suited for:

      • Sound Purists: Those looking for immersive audio may find the sound quality too basic.

      • High-Noise Environments: The open-ear design struggles in loud places, and earplugs reduce situational awareness.

      Verdict

The Suunto Wing is a well-designed and sturdy headset that delivers on safety and convenience for outdoor enthusiasts. While it won’t satisfy users seeking rich, bass-heavy audio, it’s ideal for anyone prioritizing situational awareness over sound quality. Its lightweight design, simple controls, and long-lasting battery life make it a reliable choice for runners, hikers, and cyclists. If staying safe and aware while listening on the go is your priority, the Suunto Wing is worth considering.

New Balance 1080v14 Review: The Comfiest Daily Trainer Yet?

The New Balance Fresh FoamX 1080 series has long held a reputation as a solid choice for daily training, particularly for its comfort and versatility. With the latest 1080v14, New Balance promises refined features designed to improve stability, durability, and breathability. But with only slight visual changes from the previous model, can these adjustments truly elevate the v14 over the v13?

Dubbed a “do-it-all” shoe, the 1080v14 is built to support everything from easy daily miles to high-mileage training. New Balance touts it as “the perfect blend of cushioning, lightweight feel, and progressive upper design.” This update features a new midsole geometry, an engineered mesh upper for added breathability, and enhanced durability in the outsole rubber. Let’s dive deeper to see how these upgrades hold up in real-world running conditions.

      Key specifications:

      Brand: New Balance
      Model: Fresh FoamX 1080v14
      Weight: 300g (Men’s), 235g (Women’s) for US 9 model
      Heel: 38 mm
      Toe: 32 mm
      Heel drop: 6 mm
      Type: Neutral/Road Running

      Cushioning & Ride

      Amount of cushioning: Highly cushioned
Best For: Beginners, easy runs, long runs, high-mileage runners

      Price of New Balance 1080v14

      Price: $165 USD
      Release date: Early October 2024

      New Balance 1080v14 vs v13: What’s New?

The v14 shares a close resemblance to the v13 in appearance but introduces several functional improvements focused on stability and support. The midsole geometry has been adjusted to provide a smoother ride, while the engineered mesh upper increases breathability and security across the foot. These adjustments broaden the appeal of the 1080v14, making it suitable not only for runners but also for casual wearers who prioritize comfort and versatility, similar to popular trainers like the Hoka Clifton.

      Fit

The 1080v14 fits true to size with a secure midfoot hold and a slightly narrower profile than the v13. New Balance has slightly reduced the volume of the upper, resulting in a shallower toe box. This adjustment may feel subtle at first glance, but it becomes more noticeable on longer runs. The engineered mesh upper, paired with a reduced amount of padding around the tongue and heel collar, strikes a good balance between comfort and breathability, making it feel stable yet not overly plush.

      New Balance 1080v14 Review

      Performance

In terms of performance, the Fresh FoamX midsole is well-suited for a wide range of paces. The foam provides ample cushioning without excessive bounce, absorbing impact with each step for a steady, comfortable ride. The rocker geometry helps encourage a smooth transition from heel to toe, particularly for midfoot strikers. Additionally, New Balance has added more rubber coverage on the outsole for durability, which also contributes to a more guided feel through each stride.

      New Balance 1080v14 Performance Review

      Stability

While the 1080v14 isn’t a stability shoe, it incorporates features that enhance stability and control. The shoe’s wider midfoot and forefoot provide a solid platform, particularly beneficial for those who land further forward. Heel strikers will appreciate the beveled heel, which offers a smooth landing and transition. The forefoot rocker geometry adds subtle guidance through push-off, making the 1080v14 feel supportive without restricting natural motion.

What I Liked About the New Balance 1080v14 ?

      • Comfortable for Long Runs: One of the most comfortable shoes, ideal for various paces and distances.
      • Versatile Performance: Works well for new runners and seasoned marathoners alike.
      • Improved Fit: Slightly narrower fit and enhanced upper stability create a secure feel.

What I Liked About the New Balance 1080v14 ?

      • Heavy Cushioning: The generous foam may lack ground feel for runners who prefer minimalistic shoes.
      • Limited Aesthetic Appeal: The initial colorways may not appeal to everyone.
      • Similar to v13: Runners who didn’t enjoy the previous version may find only subtle differences in this update.

      Verdict

The New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v14 is a versatile, comfortable option for daily training. Its enhanced upper and stable platform make it an excellent choice for runners looking for cushioning and support across varying distances. While the changes are conservative, the v14 retains the qualities that fans of the 1080 series appreciate, with a more secure fit and improved durability.

For those debating between the v13 and v14, the latest model delivers enough refinement to justify the upgrade, especially if you prioritize stability in a daily trainer. With its well-rounded performance and comfort, the 1080v14 remains a strong contender in the daily trainer category.

Sydney Marathon Abbott World Marathon Major

Sydney Marathon Becomes 7th Abbott World Marathon Major

The Abbott World Marathon Majors series has officially welcomed a new race — the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by Asics. This inclusion elevates the annual race in Sydney to a world stage, where it joins the elite group of marathons in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. With this announcement, Sydney becomes the first World Marathon Major on the Australian continent, marking a historic moment for global marathon racing.

Starting in 2025, runners from around the world will descend upon Sydney to conquer a course that promises to showcase Australia’s vibrant cityscape and coastline. Specific race details, including the official date, are yet to be confirmed. However, the excitement within the running community is palpable. Dawna Stone, CEO of the Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM), expressed her enthusiasm: “We cannot wait to see our community embrace this race and start planning their visits to run the streets of one of the finest cities in the world.” Stone also encouraged runners to look forward to the unique “Sydney star,” the latest achievement in the Six Star journey.

The coveted Six Star Medal, awarded to runners who complete all six current Majors, will continue to honor this tradition even as Sydney is added. For marathoners, Sydney’s addition paves the way toward an ambitious Nine Star Medal. Two additional races — Cape Town in South Africa and Shanghai in China — are potential contenders for future inclusion in 2026 and 2027, pending assessment.

Next year’s Sydney Marathon will count as a qualifying race, allowing runners to start the journey to a Nine Star achievement. Abbott has introduced a new collectible range of coins, with frames for display, to commemorate each completed race. Chris Miller, Divisional Vice President of Brand Strategy and Innovation at Abbott, captured the significance of these new milestones: “More milestones to celebrate down the road.”

For marathon enthusiasts, Sydney’s addition means more than just another finish line. It symbolizes a journey toward personal bests, new challenges, and lifelong health pursuits in one of the world’s most iconic cities.

Diadora Gara Carbon Review: Italian Flair Meets Race-Day Speed

Diadora, born and rooted in Italy, has a rich history that merges family tradition with high-quality craftsmanship. Operating from the Dolomites, Diadora brings a unique, thoughtful approach to its designs, embodying both style and innovation. The Gara Carbon represents Diadora’s first true attempt at a race-day shoe, and it’s packed with impressive features: a super-lightweight build, an innovative Pebax-based midsole (Anima PBX), and a premium carbon plate sourced from the same factory that supplies Ducati motorcycles. But with all these components, how does the Gara Carbon actually perform? Let’s dive in.

      Key specifications:

      Brand: Diadora
      Model: Gara Carbon
      Weight: 7.7 oz / 218g for US 9 model
      Heel: 39 mm
      Toe: 34 mm
      Heel drop: 5 mm
      Carbon plate: Yes

      Purpose

      Race day shoes – 5k / 10k / 21k

      Price of Diadora Gara Carbon

      Price: $300 USD

      Upper

      Diadora Gara Carbon review

At a light 210g (size US 8.5 / EUR 41), the Gara Carbon feels exceptionally lightweight yet comfortable, offering substantial padding in the heel and suede overlays around the eyelets. The heel counter is well-padded, providing a sturdy fit that complements the comfortable heel lockdown, even without an extra eyelet for a heel lock. The fit is slightly roomy with a longer design, so runners between sizes may prefer going half a size down.

The Matryx mesh upper, woven with carbon yarns, keeps the shoe light while delivering durability. The thin insole, though minimal, might feel overly thin to some runners; swapping it out could improve the fit if desired. Overall, the use of premium materials, especially in the Matryx upper, reinforces that Diadora has poured a lot into this shoe’s construction—a rare feature for many race-day shoes in this category.

      Midsole

      Diadora Gara Carbon review

Diadora has created a midsole that competes with top-tier racing shoes. The 5mm drop combined with the Anima PBX foam makes this shoe incredibly responsive and cushioned. At slower paces, the Gara Carbon may lack a bit of the rocker feel, but once you push the pace, the shoe feels quick and lively. For midfoot strikers, this setup is particularly enjoyable, providing smooth toe-offs without excessive softness.

The 35mm thick Pebax foam midsole feels bouncy and cushioned, while the carbon plate adds a snappy responsiveness. This combination makes the Gara Carbon a go-to choice for road races up to half-marathon distances, especially for runners who enjoy speed intervals or tempo runs. Heel strikers will also appreciate the extended heel cushion, making the Gara Carbon suitable for diverse running styles.

      Outsole

      Diadora Gara Carbon review

The Gara Carbon’s outsole has a simple design with blown rubber, which keeps it light and maintains solid traction on roads, even in damp conditions. While the rubber is soft and grippy, durability could be a concern on tougher surfaces. The outsole does a fine job on track and mixed terrain, though it might show wear more quickly than a sturdier outsole, especially if frequently used on dirt trails. However, the balance between grip and weight keeps this shoe responsive and comfortable on varied surfaces.

      Nike Vaporfly 3
      Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 & 4

      Pros

✅ Lightweight and breathable, with a generous fit for a racing shoe.

✅ Balanced midsole for stability and propulsion.

      ✅ Versatile performance across paces.

✅ Smooth, comfortable ride at various speeds.

      Cons

❌ Premium price and slightly heavier than some competitors.

❌ Lacks a strong rocker effect from the midfoot.

      Verdict

Diadora has created a race-day shoe that’s both stylish and high-performing with the Gara Carbon. The combination of the Matryx upper, Anima PBX midsole, and high-quality carbon plate creates a race-ready shoe that feels elegant and fast. Although slightly heavier than some competitors, it delivers a smooth ride and impressive durability, making it a unique option in the world of racing shoes. For those seeking a versatile daily trainer, Diadora Cellula provides a solid option in the lineup, while the Gara Carbon is here to make an impression with its Italian flair and speed-focused engineering.

Asics Unveils Novablast 5: Enhanced Bounce & Comfort

Five years after its debut, the Asics Novablast series has gained a reputation as one of the most reliable, bouncy, and versatile daily trainers on the market. From easy jogs to long runs and tempo sessions, the Novablast line has catered to a wide range of running needs. This year, Asics introduces the latest addition to the lineup: the Novablast 5, promising an even more energetic ride thanks to exciting new updates.

A standout feature of the Novablast 5 is its FF Blast Max midsole foam, delivering an impressive 8.5% increase in “bounce properties” compared to its predecessor’s FF Blast Plus Eco foam. This exclusive use of FF Blast Max in the midsole enhances the shoe’s energy return, adding a springier, more responsive feel with every step. Runners can expect the same cushioned comfort they’ve come to love, now with an extra boost.

      Asics Unveils Novablast 5

The Novablast 5 also includes a reimagined forefoot design with a pod-like groove, crafted to improve spring and provide a smoother, forward-driving sensation. Alongside this, Asics has upgraded the upper, moving from the woven knit in the Novablast 4 to an engineered Jacquard mesh, improving breathability while maintaining the secure fit runners need. Borrowing from the Superblast 2, the Novablast 5 features a gusseted wing tongue, designed to lock down the foot comfortably for a stable, snug feel.

      Asics Novablast 5

Asics has kept the Novablast’s signature geometric midsole look, which has been a defining visual since the line’s inception. Yosuke Atarashi, Senior Designer of Footwear at Asics, shared insights into the design approach, explaining, “We wanted the FF Blast Max to reach its full potential for the consumer. Visually, the design mirrors the dynamic, energized experience we aimed to create with this latest Novablast model.

With its new technology and classic style, the Novablast 5 is set to launch globally on December 1, 2024, at a price of $150. Asics fans and runners alike can look forward to the latest iteration, with anticipation that it may be the best Novablast release yet.

      TYR CXT 2 Elite review

TYR CXT 2 Elite Carbon Review: Premium Training Shoe Upgrade

In the competitive world of athletic footwear, TYR’s CXT-2 Elite Carbon Trainer takes things to a whole new level. Known for their high-performance swimwear, TYR’s entry into the elite training shoe market with the CXT-2 Elite Carbon brings something entirely fresh to fitness enthusiasts and competitors. Engineered specifically for intense training and competition, this shoe offers an impressive blend of stability, energy return, and durability.

Let’s break down what makes the TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon stand out, especially compared to the regular TYR CXT-2 model, and dive into a detailed look at its upper, midsole, and outsole.

      Key Specifications

      Brand: TYR
      Model: CXT-2 Elite Carbon
Heel to toe drop: 4 mm
      Carbon plate: Yes
      Price: $225

How TYR CXT-2 Elite Differs from CXT-2?

TYR’s CXT-2 Elite Carbon is more than just an upgrade; it’s a whole new category. Unlike the regular CXT-2, which is primarily a training shoe, the CXT 2 Elite Carbon is tailored for competitive performance. While both shoes share the same basic structure, the Elite version includes high-end features, like a carbon plate and enhanced foam, to boost explosive movements. This isn’t a shoe for everyone; it’s specifically designed for those who prioritize peak performance.

Notably, the CXT-2 Elite also comes with a significant price increase, retailing at $225 compared to the CXT-2’s $150. This price bump reflects the advanced technology and premium materials packed into the shoe, making it TYR’s most expensive fitness trainer to date.

      Upper: Durable Yet Lightweight

TYR CXT 2 Elite Carbon review

The upper of the CXT-2 Elite is crafted for both durability and comfort, with a dual-layer nylon mesh construction that’s tough enough to handle rope abrasion. The outer layer is robust, while the inner layer is soft, providing a comfortable fit without sacrificing durability. The Elite model drops the external heel counter found on the regular CXT-2 but retains the TPU stability wrap around the mid and rear sections of the shoe, offering a similar level of support.

The lacing system has also been simplified. The Elite uses a traditional lace setup for a clean, secure fit, while the regular CXT-2 features a webbed lacing design. Another change is the streamlined ankle collar, which has slightly less padding than the regular model. Some may prefer the more cushioned feel of the CXT-2, but those who enjoy a snug, minimalist fit will likely appreciate this update.

Midsole: PEBAX® Foam and SurgeNRG for Next-Level Responsiveness

TYR CXT 2 Elite Carbon review

The real game-changer in the CXT-2 Elite lies in its midsole. Unlike the regular CXT-2, the Elite features a high-density PEBAX® foam in the forefoot, which offers excellent energy return and responsiveness. This foam, combined with TYR’s SurgeNRG, results in an ultra-responsive feel, ideal for explosive movements and high-impact workouts. According to TYR’s tests, this combination improves overall performance by 22% and boosts prolonged performance by 29%.

Perhaps the most notable feature is the carbon plate embedded in the forefoot of the Elite. This plate enhances forward propulsion, making exercises like plyometrics and Olympic lifts feel more dynamic. Although the plate is slightly stiff initially, it’s expected to break in over time, adding to the shoe’s comfort and functionality during workouts.

      Outsole: Training-Specific Grip and Durability

TYR CXT 2 Elite Carbon review

The outsole of the CXT-2 Elite features TYRTAC™ rubber compound, optimized for indoor training environments. Its flat, non-slip design delivers solid grip and stability, making it well-suited for dynamic, multi-directional movements. While the outsole pattern mirrors that of the regular CXT-2, the addition of the carbon plate in the Elite creates a stiffer feel in the forefoot, perfect for added “pop” in quick or explosive exercises.

With the increased foam in the forefoot, the CXT-2 Elite shifts some of the weight forward, creating a midfoot-to-forefoot balance that’s beneficial for short sprints and high-intensity drills. However, if you’re using this primarily as a gym shoe, it remains stable enough for squats, lunges, and even some moderate Olympic lifts.

Who Should Buy TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon?

The TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon is best suited for athletes who prioritize performance and are willing to invest in premium training gear. Ideal for those who regularly perform high-intensity, plyometric workouts, Olympic lifts, or require explosive power, this shoe offers an extra edge. With its carbon plate and high-rebound foam, it’s particularly beneficial for competitors and those needing enhanced propulsion and energy return during dynamic movements. However, it’s not the best fit for casual gym-goers or those seeking a traditional, cushioned training shoe – the TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon is designed with serious athletes in mind.

      Final Thoughts

The TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon is a versatile, high-performance training shoe crafted for serious athletes. Its upgraded materials, innovative design, and advanced technology make it a significant step up from the standard CXT-2, with the carbon plate enhancing stability and propulsion for intense workouts. Although the price may seem high for a training shoe, its value aligns closely with premium models, much like TYR’s dedicated running shoes such as the TYR Valkyrie Elite Carbon, which is equipped with a full-length carbon plate for race day, and the TYR Valkyrie Speedworks, ideal for daily training runs. For those who seek competitive-level equipment in their training footwear, the TYR CXT-2 Elite Carbon provides a unique advantage.

Yomif Kejelcha Breaks Half-Marathon World Record in Valencia

Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha made history in Valencia on Sunday, breaking the men’s half-marathon world record with a remarkable time of 57 minutes and 30 seconds, shaving just one second off the previous record held by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo since 2021.

Kejelcha, a seasoned competitor and world indoor mile record holder, surged to the front early, maintaining an impressive pace throughout the race. By the 3-kilometer mark, he had already gained control, reaching the 5km point in 13:38, passing 10km in 27:12, and hitting 15km at 40:56. This relentless pace allowed him to break away from Kenyan runners Daniel Mateiko and Isaia Kipkoech Lasoi, securing his victory and record-breaking performance.

This latest accomplishment adds to Kejelcha’s impressive career, which includes a world championship silver medal in the 10,000 meters and a world indoor mile record set in 2019. His achievement in Valencia reinforces his status as one of the sport’s most versatile distance runners.

In the women’s half-marathon, Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich also delivered an impressive performance. Chasing Letesenbet Gidey’s record of 1:02:52, Ngetich finished just 11 seconds shy of the world record, achieving the second-fastest time in history. Competing in her first half-marathon, the former 10,000-meter world championship finalist showcased extraordinary potential in her transition to longer distances.

Kejelcha’s record-breaking run in Valencia underscores Ethiopia’s enduring prominence in long-distance running, while Ngetich’s impressive debut suggests that new records are just on the horizon for the women’s half-marathon.

      Garmin Fenix 8 review

Garmin Fenix 8 Review: Is It the Best Sports Watch of 2024?

The Garmin Fenix 8 represents a new pinnacle in Garmin’s smartwatch lineup, combining the best of the Fenix 7 Pro and Epix Pro under one advanced banner. With significant updates like an AMOLED display option, improved dive capabilities, and a revamped user interface, the Fenix 8 is a serious contender for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect.

      PROS

      ✅  AMOLED and solar-charging options
      ✅  Speaker and Microphone control
      ✅  Improved water resistance

      CONS

      ❌  No wireless charging
❌  Laggy maps and screen transitions
❌  More expensive than Fenix 7 Pro range

Design and Display: Big, Bold, and Now AMOLED

      FENIX 8 SOLAR review

At first glance, the Fenix 8 resembles its predecessors. However, there are notable upgrades, especially with the new AMOLED display available on certain models. The watch comes in two options: an AMOLED display, which offers rich color and contrast, and a solar-charging model with a memory-in-pixel display that maximizes battery life. Available in 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm sizes, there’s a fit for every wrist.

Garmin also improved the watch’s usability by adding touchscreen swipe gestures to lock and unlock the display. The design is rugged, waterproof to 40m, and built for durability—ideal for both daily training and extreme adventures.

User Interface and Navigation: Enhanced but Familiar

Garmin has reworked the user interface with smoother navigation and new menu tweaks. These adjustments make the watch more user-friendly but may still feel a bit complex to new Garmin users. Voice command functionality is limited, so interactions still require some screen navigation. However, for calls and messages, users can control these functions directly from the watch.

Sports and Fitness Tracking: Unmatched in Depth and Precision

      Garmin Fenix 8 review

The Fenix 8 shines in sports tracking, offering one of the most comprehensive tracking systems on the market. It supports advanced metrics, detailed analytics, and multi-sport modes, making it ideal for runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes alike. Garmin’s powerful algorithms provide insights into training load, VO2 max, recovery time, and more, giving users an accurate understanding of their performance.

      GPS and Heart Rate Accuracy

      Garmin fenix 8 HR accuracy
Purple - Wahoo TRACKR HR monitor Brown - Fenix 8 (Image credit: DC Rainmaker Analyzer)

GPS tracking on the Fenix 8 is outstanding, though it occasionally wavers under heavy tree cover. I tested the watch in varied environments—from city runs to rugged mountain trails—and the GPS accuracy was solid, delivering reliable route data. For heart rate monitoring, the Fenix 8’s wrist-based sensor generally performed well, closely matching my Polar H10 chest strap readings, though it occasionally lagged during intense intervals.

      Battery Life: Long-Lasting Power

      Garmin Fenix 8 review

Battery life on the Fenix 8 is impressive, especially with the 51mm AMOLED model, which lasted nearly 13 days with the always-on display active. For a sports watch with an AMOLED screen, that’s exceptional. Battery consumption during activities was equally efficient: in Normal Power mode, a 90-minute run used about 3% battery. This longevity easily outperforms most smartwatches, including the Apple Watch Ultra 2, giving Garmin an edge for users who prioritize battery life.

Here’s a snapshot of battery performance:

      • Overnight drain: 1-2%
      • 24-hour usage (without GPS): 8%
      • Marathon in Max Accuracy mode: 6%
      • Daily life (with always-on screen off): 15 days with about 8 hours of GPS use

The solar model offers even longer battery life, ideal for those who spend extended time outdoors.

      Garmin Fenix-8 Battery Life

Comparing all the battery modes across different brands can be challenging, but this table provides a solid overview. Garmin, Suunto, and Coros stand out as top choices.

      Pricing and Value

The Fenix 8 starts at $999.99 and goes up to $1199.99, depending on model and size. This premium price reflects its high-end features, but it’s a steep investment, especially with alternatives like the Fenix 7 Pro and Epix Pro offering similar capabilities for less. For those who don’t need features like the new mic, speaker, or dive capabilities, older models may offer better value.

For those seeking a more affordable option, the Garmin Fenix E, priced at $799.99, offers a stripped-down experience with most of the core features intact.

Verdict: Is the Garmin Fenix 8 Worth It?

The Garmin Fenix 8 is undoubtedly the most advanced sports watch Garmin has released. Its big, bright AMOLED screen, enhanced battery life, and robust tracking capabilities make it perfect for serious athletes and adventurers. But if you already own a Fenix 7 or Epix Pro, the Fenix 8’s additional features might not justify the upgrade unless you’re after the AMOLED display or dive functions.

The Fenix 8 competes strongly with smartwatches like the Apple Watch Ultra 2, especially in sports tracking and battery life, but it doesn’t match their app ecosystems. If your focus is on fitness and adventure, the Fenix 8 is an unmatched tool.

In summary, the Garmin Fenix 8 is a powerhouse for sports enthusiasts seeking the best in tracking, battery, and durability. But for those who can forego the newest upgrades, Garmin’s previous-generation watches or competitors like the Suunto Race S could provide similar value at a lower price.

      Chicago Marathon 2024

Historic Wins and Heartfelt Tributes at Chicago Marathon 2024

The Chicago Marathon 2024 took center stage this Sunday, October 13, with thousands of runners ready to make their mark. As the finish line welcomed countless finishers, one absence was deeply felt—Kelvin Kiptum, the man who made marathon history on these very streets last year, was no longer with us.

      kelvin kiptum chicago marathon 2024

In 2023, Kiptum stunned the world by running a mind-blowing 2:00:35, setting a new marathon world record and becoming the first man to finish in under two hours and one minute. Tragically, only months after achieving this milestone, Kiptum and his coach were killed in a car accident in Kenya.

Before the race began, marathon organizers honored Kiptum with a moment of silence, paying tribute to his incredible legacy. In a statement shared earlier, they wrote, “The 2 hours and 35 seconds Kelvin spent on these streets last October will be forever etched into the history of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. As we look to the start line today, we remember his remarkable achievement and what could have been.”

Kiptum’s absence didn’t go unnoticed. Every runner who stepped up to the start line carried a part of his legacy, as his impact on the sport continues to inspire.

Ruth Chepngetich Smashes Women's World Record

The Chicago Marathon 2024 wasn’t just about reflection—it was also about making history. While the women’s elite field promised excitement, few expected to witness a world record, let alone a performance that would redefine women’s marathon racing.

Ruth Chepngetich came into the race determined to make her mark, and from the very start, she did just that. Pulling away from her competitors early, she reached the halfway point at a blistering pace of 1:04:16, not only setting a new record for American soil but also marking one of the fastest half-marathon splits ever recorded by a woman.

Despite slowing down slightly in the second half, the crowds pushed her forward. When she crossed the finish line in 2:09:57, Chepngetich became the first woman to break the 2:10:00 barrier, a monumental achievement that is often likened to a man breaking the two-hour marathon. Her emotions were clear in the post-race interview, where she dedicated her victory and record to her late compatriot, Kelvin Kiptum.

John Korir Claims the Men’s Title

In the men’s race, Kenya’s John Korir took control when it mattered most. The pacers set an initial pace for a 2:04:00 marathon, with a tight pack of elite runners sticking together through the 30K mark. Once the pacers stepped aside, Korir shifted gears, surging ahead of the field.

His move was decisive. Within 5K, Korir opened up a 30-second gap, which continued to widen. He crossed the line in 2:02:43, earning his first major marathon victory and posting the second-fastest time in Chicago Marathon 2024 history—behind only Kelvin Kiptum’s record-setting run.
